but I know there's a wealth of knowledge here on Oppo.
So some buddies and I are looking into doing a sailfish charter in January (hence the AMC Marlin). Any Florida, Gulf Coast, Costa Rican, or angler Opponauts out there have any advice or input on where to go/charters to use? Most of us are experienced bass and other freshwater fish anglers, with a few of us having some offshore experience too. Probably about 5 or 6 of us going, trying to keep it relatively affordable. ($400-600/person for the charter) At this point we're thinking Costa Rica for a long weekend with two days of fishing. Any input is appreciated!

Well, if you like BIG fish...BC is where you find the biggest freshwater fish this side of the ocean.
Caught a 5' 6" sturgeon last year Jan 1!

Lookin' to go for deep sea sport fish. The goal here is to escape the freezing cold winters of the Great Lakes area! lol I live in Illinois though, so I'm hoping to make a trip or two further north for some sturgeon and northern fishing next year.

Fair enough. I just gotta give the hometown plug. PS Jan 1 in Vancouver it was 44, which is a lot better than the -18 where I was coming from!

Yeah, my brother is in Seattle and I plan on making a trip to the PNW this winter too. Their winters are much milder than Midwest/Great Lakes winters. :/

Yup. I lived in the PNW for about 18 years and have lived in eastern ontario for almost a decade now. Every winter I thing "what have I done?"

Yeah, it snowed 16" the day I moved in (January 1st) and then in March I slipped on ice and broke my femur... Welcome to Chicago! :D

Broken femur is one of the most painful injuries one can sustain.

Yep, especially when the muscles in your leg start spasming and pull the break against itself... for 6 hours. -_- My orthopedic surgeon informed me that is supposed to be more painful than child birth, so I don't wanna hear a peep from my future (theoretical) wife about that crap! lol

I dislocated my knee 2x and had surgery on it. That would be the 2nd most painful injury one can sustain. (Femur breakage is the most painful). I know that muscle spasm feel. Luckily I only had to lie with it like that for 2.5 hours!

Went off the coast of Ft. Lauderdale, FL and caught a 70" sailfish. The two other people on the boat (the other group members didn't show) caught one too. Great fishing around the summer months but don't know about January. I think I paid around $200 for my spot. The worst experience was in Nassau, Bahamas. 4 hours and didn't catch a thing. I don't know if that's normal for the Spring in the Bahamas but the excursion left me wanting more.
Good luck on your trip though!

Thanks! From everything we've heard and read so far Costa Rica sounds like it's the spot to go for sailfish and marlin, and peak season is December-February.
